This is a tuffy reading your description, and also not knowing the age of it; However, going by the first paragraph, the evaporator coils could be froze up with ice on them which would limit the air flow and thaw all the food out. I also dont know how long you unplugged it for. But in any event, "something happened" and will probably happen again, So keep the food purchases to a minimum for a while to see how it goes or absolutely call an appliance tech and describe to him over the phone what its doing at that moment, if its still messing up.
