What started the whole "designer" dog epidemic?

Look up the creation of labradoodles. They were created with the best intentions but the breeding program was stopped when the guy realised he couldn't get any reliable results with it. Since then, other people started crossing everything with poodles to make them ''allergy free'' and crossing small dogs together to make them cute etc etc. Although the reason people find yorkies cute evades me..
